Oral systemic links have been the subject of intense research efforts for several decades. The findings are now sufficient to indicate significant associations between periodontal disease, diabetes, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. The strength of the relationship between periodontal disease, adverse pregnancy events and rheumatoid arthritis among others is still awaiting further research results.
